Time Modulated Array for dual function radar and communication

Abstract: International audienceA Time Modulated Array based technique is used to simultaneously do a radar function in the main lobe and a communication function in the side lobes. It uses an averaging to do the radar function, while the communication is done with the variation from an intermediary pattern to another. A 12-antenna array is shown with a stable main lobe for radar application and a variation of the magnitude of the side lobes to perform an Amplitude Modulation at 55° from the main lobe

To provide variations in the sidelobe levels (SLLs) towards the communication direction, each phase of the transmit array of the phased array system is manipulated from pulse to pulse basis.…”

“…In this work, we concentrate on JRC system employing monostatic broadcast channel topology. Various joint waveform design techniques for JRC system employing monostatic broadcast channel topology have been discussed in existing literatures [16–24]. Amplitude modulation (AM)‐based dual‐function radar‐communications (DFRCs) systems are proposed in [16–19], where multiple orthogonal waveforms are used to embed the information to be transmitted, and the power levels of the radar sidelobes toward the communication directions are used to embed communication symbols.…”

However, there are two limitations for the AM‐based joint system: (i) the communication receivers must be outside the radar main lobe, which are not guaranteed in practise; (ii) the data transmission rate of the proposed system in [16, 17] is very low.…”
