Radar imaging based on static high-resolution coherent radar is widely known as inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging. This 'all-weather' system is able to provide slant-range -Doppler images of non-cooperative targets whose motion is unknown. Conventional ISAR systems are designed for imaging targets with a direct line of sight of sensors. For this reason, they have a reduced performance in today's complex scenarios -such as urban environments -where secondary returned waveforms are added to directly reflected echoes coming from targets. They are known as ghost artefacts since they obscure true targets when using the standard range-Doppler algorithm (RDA). In this study, an innovative multipath mitigation technique is presented, in which 'time reversal (TR)' concept is implemented in ISAR images, leading to 'TR-ISAR algorithm'. For this purpose, a pre-processing algorithm is previously needed so as to solve the geometric problem related to multipath. Finally, superresolution algorithms provide us with the tools to mitigate the spurious component that arises during the averaging process carried out by TR-ISAR. The authors' conclusion is that imaging quality after employing superresolution approaches is clearly improved. As a proof-of-concept, real data from high-resolution radar have been used to verify the proposed method.

This paper addresses the estimation of the height of a point scatterer over a sea surface via multipath exploitation for a High Range Resolution radar that is using pulse range compression, such as Synthetic Aperture Radars. We first focus our attention on the physical model, in particular on the specular/diffuse reflection coefficients, this coefficients being derived from the empirical Miller Brown and Vegh model. The gravity waves are also simulated since they modify the acquisition geometry such as the local grazing angle. Secondly, the signal model is derived, thus allowing an easy derivation of the time delays (direct echo and replicas), these time delays being converted into a height estimation for possible automatic ship recognition applications. Our algorithm is a non-conventional radar signal processing, in other words it uses the backscattered pulse over before range compression and demodulation. The aim of the paper is to understand for which radar and sea parameters, as well as acquisition scenes, it is possible to extract the scatterer height information using the multipath of the backscattered electromagnetic wave.

The theoretical implementation aspect of high‐frequency electromagnetic scattering prediction from the composite model is proposed in this work. First, the composite model is described and the multipath scattering prediction method (physical optics + equivalent edge currents + four‐path model) is formulated. Then, by introducing the concept of the specular image facet, a modification, named specular image modified four‐path model (SIMFPM), is developed to calculate the coupling scattering field between the electrically large three‐dimensional perfect electric conducting target and the dielectric rough surface. The proposed procedure makes preparation for the analysis of the multipath scattering effects on inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging in the final part. Numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy of the SIMFPM and present the multipath effects on the ISAR image.
