“…Optical fiber sensors have been extensively used in experimental studies of gas-solid fluidized systems over the last decades [7,106,108,109]. Nevertheless, commonly, these sensors cannot simultaneously measure the solids holdup and velocities, show blind regions (their overall size is large and becomes highly invasive D probe ∼ 2 cm ) or fail to provide accurate time resolved measurements [110][111][112]. As a response to these limitations of optical probes, in the mFReael, we developed a new Two-Tip Optical Fiber (TTOF) probe, which allowed simultaneous measurements of solids holdup and particles velocities, as well as other derived key hydrodynamic parameters, such as bubble rise velocity, bubble frequency and bubble chord length [20], along with a new simple and reliable calibration method for solids holdup and solids velocity [113].…”

“…One of the most common methods to identify the different flow regimes in FBs is the analysis of standard deviations [9,12,[26][27][28]. In this method, the standard deviation of a timewise sampled metric at different superficial gas inlet velocities is estimated.…”

“…Several other works found in the literature regarding the application of different experimental and analysis techniques can be highlighted. Kalo et al [9] studied the flow regime in a conical gas-solid fluidized bed using mono and binary solid particles. The flow regimes were identified using the Kolmogorov entropy approach applied to the time series of radioactive particle tracking (RPT) technique data.…”

“…The scale-up of multiphase flow reactors is still a challenging task mainly because of the complex interactions involved at different length and time scales in these reactors. In our previous work, we established that in both monodispersed and binary dispersed gas–solid conical fluidized beds, phenomena occur at different length scales . Further depending upon operating conditions and the bed composition (in case of a binary bed), the interaction mechanism changes from fluid–solid (at the bottom section of the conical bed) to solid–solid (at the middle and top section of the bed) dominating interactions.…”
