Widespread reworking of Hadean-to-Eoarchean continents during Earth’s thermal peak

The nature and evolution of Earth’s crust during the Hadean and Eoarchean is largely unknown owing to a paucity of material preserved from this period. However, clues may be found in the chemical composition of refractory minerals that initially grew in primordial material but were subsequently incorporated into younger rocks and sediment during lithospheric reworking. Here we report Hf isotopic data in 3.9 to 1.8 billion year old detrital zircon from modern stream sediment samples from West Greenland, which document successive reworking of felsic Hadean-to-Eoarchean crust during subsequent periods of magmatism. Combined with global zircon Hf data, we show a planetary shift towards, on average, more juvenile Hf values 3.2 to 3.0 billion years ago. This crustal rejuvenation was coincident with peak mantle potential temperatures that imply greater degrees of mantle melting and injection of hot mafic-ultramafic magmas into older Hadean-to-Eoarchean felsic crust at this time. Given the repeated recognition of felsic Hadean-to-Eoarchean diluted signatures, ancient crust appears to have acted as buoyant life-rafts with enhanced preservation-potential that facilitated later rapid crustal growth during the Meso-and-Neoarchean.

Detrital geochronology provides insight into a broad range of Earth Science questions. However, detrital zircon U‐Pb age distributions are inherently univariate, and thus quantitative comparison methods are limited to one‐dimension (1D) and subject to nonunique results due to overlapping age groups. We developed two‐dimensional (2D) quantitative comparison measures for bivariate kernel density estimates (KDEs) and cumulative distribution functions (CDFs). These methods are extensions of 1D quantitative comparison measures commonly used in detrital geochronology: Similarity, Likeness, and Cross‐correlation of KDEs and Kolmogorov‐Smirnov (K‐S) and Kuiper tests of CDFs. We demonstrate the efficacy of these methods by applying them to a global compilation of detrital and igneous zircon univariate U‐Pb data (n = 767,660) and bivariate U‐Pb and Hf (i.e., εHfT) data (n = 114,311) parsed geographically into eight continental landmasses demarcated by Paleozoic sutures. The 2D quantitative comparison measures behave in a similar fashion to their 1D counterparts in terms of sensitivity and consistency regardless of parameterization (e.g., kernel bandwidth and discretization interval). Results show that the detrital record reliably reflects the igneous record for both univariate U‐Pb and bivariate εHfT distributions between 4,400 and 0 Ma. In contrast, 1D and 2D quantitative comparison results differ over the narrower Ediacaran‐Cambrian time interval due to nonunique univariate zircon U‐Pb age groups; the 2D quantitative results consistently identify continental landmasses involved in the formation of Gondwana. We implemented the 2D methods in a new MATLAB‐based graphical user interface, DZstats2D, which is available as open‐source code and as standalone applications for macOS and Windows.

The size of continents is an essential parameter to understand the growth of the continental crust and the evolution of the solid Earth because it is subject to tectonism and mantle convection and affects the preservation of the crust. This article reviews the secular change in the size of continents on the early Earth, focusing on terrigenous clastic rocks, especially quartzose sandstones occurring on relatively large continents. The earliest continental crust in the Hadean or early Archean was produced with a width of ∼200–500 km, similar to modern oceanic island arcs along subduction zones or oceanic islands in hot spot regions by mantle plume heating. Through the collision and amalgamation of such primitive continental crusts, continental blocks over 500 km in width and length evolved and appeared by ca. 3.5 Ga. Through further amalgamation, during ca. 3.3–2.5 Ga, the Archean continents emerged with widths and lengths greater than 1,000 km, which were still smaller than those of modern continents. Continents with widths and lengths of nearly 10,000 km have existed since ca. 2.4 Ga (early Proterozoic). Further analyses of the composition and formation mechanism of clastic rocks will help reveal more quantitative secular changes in the sizes of continents.
