Timing and nature of in-house postoperative events following uncomplicated elective endovascular aneurysm treatment

Abstract: Object Most patients with asymptomatic intracranial aneurysms treated with endovascular methods are closely observed overnight in an intensive care unit setting for complications, including ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, cardiac dysfunction, and groin access complications. The purpose of this study was to analyze the timing, nature, and rate of in-house postoperative events. Methods Patients who underwent endovascular treatment or retreatment of unruptured cerebral aneurysms from March 2002 to June 2012 wer… Show more

“…Critical care units are substantially more expensive than other hospital units, and their direct costs are rising [15,16]. Complications of EVT of UIAs are known but rare, making their indirect costs challenging to measure [17][18][19][20][21][22]. Hospital charges for EVT of UIAs often exceed those for surgical clipping [17].…”

“…In previous reports the vast majority of peri-procedural complications from elective endovascular aneurysm therapy occurred either during the procedure or within the first 4 hours following the procedure 10 12 16. Post-anesthesia recovery units provide low patient-to-nurse ratios (often 1:1 or 1:2) and invasive monitoring capabilities, allowing for rapid identification and management of potential complications.…”

“…The most significant complication of aneurysmal surgery is ischaemic stroke (Arias et al. ). To ensure isolated NPs, patients with multiple ocular motor NPs were excluded.…”
