“…In agreement with Lasry et al, we demonstrate that stay-athome orders significantly increase the amount of time people spend at home. 3 Further, our multivariable linear regression analysis, which demonstrates that percent time spent at home was the most significant modulator of Rt, indicates that the primary driving factor in reducing viral transmission was limiting mobility. In conjunction, these results provide evidence that NPIs can be useful in controlling COVID-19 outbreak by effectively reducing social mobility.…”

“…Mandated policies including limitations on mass gatherings, business closures, and stay-at-home orders have aimed to encourage social distancing and flatten the curve. [2][3][4] As of April 30, 2020, over 3,249,000 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed worldwide, with more than 1,067,000 cases and 62,000 resulting deaths in the United States. 5 In an effort to contain the virus, broad shutdowns have resulted in severe economic impacts including 26 million Americans filing for unemployment within a 5 week period.…”

“…We begin our analysis by examining whether SIPOs affect social mobility, drawing daily state-level data on social distancing for the period March 8, 2020 to April 17, 2020 from SafeGraph, Inc. For our analysis, we leverage this firm's anonymized population movement dataset representing 45 million smartphone devices. These data have recently been used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to gather information on the degree to which social distancing has been practiced by individuals in the United States following the outbreak (Lasry et al 2020). From these data we collect a state-by-day measure of the percent of the state population who remain at home for the entire day.…”

“…Most countries have implemented measures that enforce physical distancing. However, Sweden has controversially resisted a "lockdown" approach (Ward, 2020), and the federal response and variations in regional responses in the United States are widely criticized (Lasry et al, 2020;Villarreal, 2020). Conversely, some leaders, both internationally and within Canada, are celebrated for responding more effectively.…”
