Timing of intra-aortic balloon pump support and 1-year survival

Abstract: Patients who warrant IABP support in the post-operative setting have a significantly increased mortality at 1-year when compared to any other group. Therefore, earlier IABP support as part of surgical strategy may help to improve the outcome.

“…1 Although the haemodynamic effects of IABP application are well known, IABP application can have serious vascular complications that are frequently of the ischaemic type. 2,3 The insertion of both sheathed and sheathless IABPs can increase coronary blood flow by decreasing the cardiac preload and afterload. 4,5 Sheaths can allow easy placement of the catheter and reduce the risk of haemorrhage at the site of arterial entrance.…”

“…Nearly all published studies have demonstrated that patients receiving preoperative IABPs have better outcomes than those receiving IABPs intraoperatively or postoperatively (Ali et al, 2005;Creswell et al, 1995;Gutfinger et al, 1999;Holman et al, 2000;Pfeiffer et al, 2005;Ramnarine et al, 2005). Yet, this study includes patients who have received…”
