Timing of the inhibitory effect of fruit on return bloom of ‘Valencia’ sweet orange (Citrus sinensis(L.) Osbeck)

Abstract: In 'Valencia' sweet orange, fruit inhibits flowering from the time it completes its growth. Neither soluble sugar content nor starch accumulation in leaves due to fruit removal was related to flowering intensity, but some kind of imbalance in nitrogen metabolism was observed in trees tending to flower scarcely.

“…High/low levels of endogenous GA in leaves from on/off-trees have been inversely/positively related to flower initiation (Koshita et al, 1999). This agrees with the reduced flowering intensity reported when GA 3 is applied in the floral bud inductive period (Guardiola et al, 1982;Monselise and Halevy, 1964), coinciding in time with the more pronounced fruit-inhibiting effect on flowering (Martínez-Fuentes et al, 2010). Furthermore, in Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.…”

“…The fruit begins to exert an inhibitory effect on flowering from the time it completes its growth weight, and this coincides with the floral bud inductive period (November) (Martínez-Fuentes et al, 2010;Muñoz-Fambuena et al, 2011;Verreynne and Lovatt, 2009). In our experiments, however, advancing the treatment date from November to October did not improve the response in on-trees.…”

“…Girdling causes accumulation of carbohydrate within the girdled branch (Goldschmidt et al, 1985). Thus, these phenomena have indirectly demonstrated the involvement of carbohydrate in flowering, and the carbohydrate factor has been discussed in correlation with flowering (Garcia-Luis et al, 1995;Goldschmidt et al, 1985;Martínez-Fuentes et al, 2010).…”

“…During years of high crop load ('on' year), carbohydrate accumulation and fl owering are very low. After that, no direct effect on fl ower induction and differentiation processes could be found in mostly experimental evidences, although a quantitative but not determinant effect has been cited García-Luis et al 1995 ;Martínez-Fuentes et al 2010 ) . Most information has been generated in alternate bearing varieties, characterized by the lack of fl owering after an 'on' year.…”
