The riverine system can recover itself to its balance once pollutant enters the water body. Nonetheless, this self-purification capability only applies when the concentration and magnitude of the pollutant do not exceed the pollution load capacity. As the main river in Malang, the Brantas River receives most of the pollutants from anthropogenic activities, especially domestic wastewater. A study was conducted to uncover the capacity of the pollution load of the Brantas River. Samples were obtained from surface water in five stations along the river and analysed according to the domestic wastewater parameters in the Permen LHK No. P.68/2016 against river water quality for Class II limit. A model was then constructed using QUAL2Kw software. The analysis showed that Brantas River does not have sufficient allocation for COD and BOD at all stations, and NH3 at downstream stations. In contrast, the river remains able to accept TSS and coliform inputs. The model showed that only coliform contaminants can be self-purified despite all citizens discharging domestic wastewater containing coliform at the maximum concentration and flow. It is clear that to make the pollution load for domestic wastewater available in Malang, river quality must be managed before the stream enters the city.

According to the observation conducted in the upstream Brantas for the four water quality parameters, i.e., pH, DO, COD, and TDS [54,55], there was a decreasing trend in COD from 2017 to 2019; conversely, the TDS increased. This condition indicates a rise in dissolved solids in the upstream Brantas waters, which may interfere with water use in the Brantas since, at some levels, it will be hazardous to use owing to continuous exposure to chemicals.…”

River water pollution is a significant environmental problem in Indonesia. On the other hand, river water is an important source of drinking water. Therefore, clean and safe water has become a priority program of the Government and is parallel with the international agreement known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Rapid population growth and industrialization cause inadequate access to safe water; only 73% of Indonesian people can access safe water. This review paper aims to present a comprehensive discussion concerning water pollution in four big rivers, i.e., Siak, Citarum, Bengawan Solo, and Brantas Rivers, that have experienced pollution and provide alternative solutions to mitigate the pollution. Data were collected from related institutions, governments' regulations, the authors' experiences, and literature studies. Developing a riparian zone with multiple ecological services and introducing Internet of Things (IoT) devices that monitor and provide real-time water quality information is essential for mitigating river water pollution. Law enforcement is an alternative method to reduce point-source pollutants from industries. Non-point source pollutants from domestic and agricultural wastes may be reduced through spreading awareness and implementing personal and environmental hygiene, involving the community in designing, as well as monitoring and evaluating water quality. Those approaches should be accompanied by proper institutions, regulations, and policies.

Aquascape merupakan miniatur ekosistem akuatik. Interaksi antara komponen abiotik dengan ikan dan tumbuhan menciptakan sebuah pemandangan bawah air yang estetis. Perairan merupakan habitat ikan yang secara langsung mempengaruhi kesehatan dan perkembangan ikan. Meningkatnya kekeruhan perairan dari sumber air ditambah meningkatnya sisa pakan dan buangan metabolit menurunkan kualitas air dan keindahan aquascape. Tingkat kekeruhan dan kadar amonia yang melebihi baku mutu lingkungan menyebabkan hipoksia dan memicu pertumbuhan penyakit. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk memperbaiki kualitas air terutama parameter kekeruhan agar mendukung kegiatan budidaya ikan hias melalui konsep dan desain unit aquascape yang optimal, dengan tambahan tumbuhan air sebagai salah satu media filternya. Metode kegiatan dari survei, sosialisasi, penyuluhan, praktik pembuatan dan pemeliharaan unit. Desain aquascape untuk budidaya ikan hias merupakan produk dari kegiatan ini. Pelaksanaan kegiatan dari Mei sampai Juli 2023, di Kelurahan Cempaka, Kecamatan Cempaka Kota Banjarbaru pada kelompok Karang Taruna. Pelatihan pembuatan desain dan unit aquascape sistem biofilterisasi dengan keberhasilan sebesar 75%. Praktik instalasi media aquascape sebesar 80%. Indikator evaluasi dari komponen peningkatan pengetahuan kelompok mitra 80%. Teknik operasional dan pemeliharaan unit, pengetahuan pemilihan biota dan penjadwalan pemberian pakan masing-masing meningkat sebesar 70%. Komitmen mitra untuk bersama-sama mengelola dan menjalankan kegiatan aquascape merupakan modal sosial, selain meningkatkan kontribusi pada pendapatan mitra. Pemanfaatan ulang air melalui unit filter dapat mengefesiensikan sistem aquascape. Mekanisme penyaringan ini untuk menetralkan senyawa amonia dan zat toksik lainnya sebelum masuk dalam ekosistem aquascape. Teknik aquascape mampu mengefisienkan biaya pergantian air, perawatan dan aerasi. Pereduksi zat-zat berbahaya dari sisa pakan, feses serta mengurangi kekeruhan.
