Tinnitus Handicap Inventory for Evaluating Treatment Effects

Abstract: Two different methods yielded comparable results in identifying a reduction in the THI score of 6 and 7 points, respectively, as the minimal clinically relevant change. This study provides a first orientation for sample size calculations and for planning the design of future studies.

“…The total score on the THI can be calculated by adding the scores per item. A decrease of 20 points in the THI after an intervention is considered to be an indication for a successful treatment, although a recent study suggested a decrease of 7 points to be relevant [Zeman et al, 2011] • The Tinnitus Handicap Questionnaire (THQ) measures the patients' perceived degree of handicap due to tinnitus. Patients scored their agreement with 27 different items on a scale from 0 to 100 (0 = I strongly disagree, 100 = I strongly agree).…”

“…For this purpose, we calculated a paired Student's t test. Beneficial THI response was defined as a minimum change of seven points in the THI from baseline to week 3 [46]. In addition, positive treatment response was also indicated by a CGI score B3 at week 3.…”

“…We based our sample size calculation on the effect size determined by Zeman and colleagues [38]. They calculated an effect size of 1.01 for a much better/very much better response by comparing the change in THI score to CGI scores for a pooled population of chronic tinnitus patients (n=210) following different treatments for tinnitus [38].…”
