Tissue Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme in Patients With Various Clinical Forms of Psoriasis

Abstract: Tissue angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) was measured in 60 patients with psoriasis and in 20 healthy individuals. According to clinical forms of psoriasis, patients were further divided into three groups: psoriasis with solitary lesions (n=20), psoriasis with multiple disseminated lesions (n=20) and erythrodermic psoriasis (n=20). The tissue ACE activity was determined before and after therapy, by the spectrophotometric method using hippuryl-l-histidyl-l-leucine as a substrate. The enzyme activity is expres… Show more

“…Results in this part of the study proved a significant increase in incidence obesity, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (p=0.021) in psoriatic patients in group B in relation to control B group, and this findings were in agreement with the study of Al-Mutairi et al [38] Solomon et al [39] Brauchi et al [40] Cohen et al [41] of Chen et al [30] and Qureshi et al [42].…”

“…On the other hand increased risk of hypertension in psoriatic patients can be explained by the effect of the chronic systemic inflammatory state in psoriasis and the systemic use of medications which are known to increase the risk of hypertension such as CSA [42]. Additionally, the serum level of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) is elevated in psoriasis with a subsequently increased production of angiotensin II which increases the vascular tone.…”

“…The most remarkably elevated plasma CD143 activity was reported in the DD genotype, followed by the ID and II genotypes [34]. A series of studies have established a linkage between psoriasis and increased serum CD143 activity [15,16,35]. These data make us postulate that individuals carrying the DD genotype, compared with the ID and II genotypes, are more prone to predisposing psoriasis, a speculation supporting the results of our study.…”

“…Altered CD143 activity leads to variance in clinical forms of human diseases, and higher activity has been reported in skin tissues [13,14]. A significantly increased CD143 activity was also detected in patients with psoriasis compared with healthy individuals [15,16].…”

“…Serum ACE activity was significantly decreased in all clinical forms of the disease after the therapy. 8 Alender et al measured serum and tissue ACE levels in 20 patients with lichen planus before and after therapy, and also in 20 healthy individuals. According to their study, before therapy, serum ACE activity was significantly increased in patients with lichen planus (35.9±2.33 U/L) in comparison to healthy individuals (28.16±1.7 U/L).…”
