Tissue banking in Bangladesh: 12 years of experience (2003–2014)

Abstract: Tissue Banking and Biomaterial Research Unit (TBBRU), the only tissue bank of Bangladesh, has been established to create an available supply of human tissue allografts for transplantation in Bangladesh. Since its establishment in 2003, TBBRU strictly follows the guidelines of tissue banking setup by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the European Association of Tissue Banks and the American Association of Tissue Banks. Though started serving from earlier, regular supply of tissue allografts from this bank… Show more

“…Human placenta/amniotic sacs were collected during cesarean sections and kept in 4 °C. Within 24 h we processed and prepared the membrane as described before [24, 38]. Amniotic membranes were separated carefully from chorionic membrane manually and washed with PBS (Gibco) repeatedly until a complete elimination of blood clots was achieved.…”

“…Clinically, amnion has been applied as a wound covering bioactive material to heal split thickness skin burn wounds as well as for children with partial-thickness facial burns [36, 37]. From our experience, amniotic membrane as a graft for burn wounds enclosure in Bangladesh appears to be advantageous [38]. But the limited number of membrane donors and the lack of trained personnel in amniotic graft processing are major challenges.…”

“…Legislation in many Asian countries also does not address technical specifications or the quality management of tissue banking. To overcome this problem, Bangladesh’s only tissue bank, the Tissue Banking and Biomedical Research Unit for instance, follows the IAEA, EATB and AATB guidelines [ 68 ]. In Japan, the Japanese Society of Tissue Transplantation (JSTT) consolidated more comprehensive guidelines in the Asia Pacific region and published three tissue banking related documents: (1) Guideline on the Safety, Storage, and Application of Human Tissue in Medical Practice [ 69 ]; (2) Guideline on Ethical Issues in Application of Human Tissue to Medical Practice [ 70 ]; and (3) Basic Standards for Operating A Human Tissue Bank & Quality Assessment Form [ 71 ].…”

“…For this reason, IAEA contained a broader responsibility in the development of quality, safety, ethical issues at international level and to establish viable networks for providing sterilized tissues through the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) and the European Association of Tissue Banks (EATB). Previously, we have reported our experience in tissue banking service in Bangladesh in terms of the method of donor selection, processing, storage and quality assurance of the tissue allografts (Akhtar et al 2016). In this article, we presented the impact of the IAEA programme in tissue banking practices and outcomes in Bangladesh.…”
