The purpose of this study was to verify histologically the biocompatibility of the tissue conditioners, F. I. T. T. , Lynal, Visco-gel, and a zinc oxide and eugenol impression paste, when placed in intraoral wounds and surgical osseous cavities in rats. It was possible to conclude that the paste was the most irritating material. Among the tissue conditioners, Lynal and Visco-gel presented similar results and were more biocompatible.

Abstract. The use of photoelastic analysis contributes to the rehabilitation of patients with oral-sinus-nasal sequelae, which in turn affect important functions such as chewing, swallowing, and speech. The prosthetic rehabilitation with implant-retained dentures is a suitable treatment option. The purpose of this study was to verify, by using a photoelastic analysis, the stress distribution in implant-retained palatal obturator dentures (relined or not) associated with different attachment systems (O-ring, bar-clip, and bar-clip associated with distally placed O-rings). Two photoelastic models were obtained from an experimental maxillary cast presenting an oral-nasal communication.One model had two 13-mm length implants placed on the left region. A total of eight colorless maxillary obturators were fabricated and subsequently four of them were relined with soft silicone soft, and three had attachment systems associated. The assembly (model/attachment system/prosthesis) was positioned in a circular polariscope and a 100-N load was applied at 10 mm∕s. The results showed that the denture relining influenced the distribution and amount of stress on the models. The O-ring group displayed the lowest stress levels, followed by bar-clip system associated with distally placed O-rings and bar-clip groups.

IntroducciónLa rehabilitación de pacientes edéntulos con prótesis total y/o pró-tesis parcial removible tiene como objetivo la preservación de los dientes remanentes y del reborde óseo, así como el reestablecimiento de la función masticatoria y estética. Sin embargo, la reabsorción del hueso alveolar es un proceso crónico e irreversible que, si no es controlado, podría generar desajustes en las bases acrílicas de las prótesis causando molestias al paciente y la incidencia de fuerzas horizontales nocivas sobre los dientes pilares, como sucede en los casos de prótesis parciales de extremo libre (1). Además, el desajuste en las bases puede favorecer la concentración de fuerzas en determinadas zonas del reborde, acelerando el proceso de reabsorción ósea (2).Viendo estos efectos, la adaptación de las bases acrílicas debe ser periódicamente controlada y si se encontrara un desajuste, estas pró-tesis deben ser readaptadas a los tejidos subyacentes. De esa forma, los pacientes deben asistir al consultorio periódicamente para la evaluación del tratamiento y para el rebase de sus prótesis.Una de las técnicas de rebase de estas prótesis es realizada en el propio consultorio usando materiales especialmente producidos para esta finalidad, los rebases directos. Este método denominado rebase inmediato puede ser utilizado con materiales rígidos o blandos, los cuales eliminan la fase de laboratorio donde se tiene que realizar el prensado para el rebase de la prótesis. Siendo por este motivo una técnica más simple, rápida y económica.La resina acrílica química o térmicamente activada es el material más utilizado para confeccionar las bases de prótesis removibles totales o parciales. Por estas razones, investigadores desarrollaron RESUMENLa presente revisión de literatura tiene por objetivo mostrar las principales características, ventajas y limitaciones de los rebases blandos con el fin de acercar su utilización al clínico general. Los materiales resilientes para rebase de prótesis han sido desenvueltos para minimizar las posibles molestias causadas por las bases de las prótesis en la mucosa. Estos materiales forman un grupo de materiales elásticos que llenan total o parcialmente la base de la prótesis, con la finalidad de disminuir el impacto de la fuerza masticatoria sobre la mucosa de revestimiento, pudiendo ser utilizados como material temporal o de un carácter más permanente. Los rebases blandos además de clasificarse según el tiempo de uso como provisionales (corta duración) o permanentes (larga duración), estos pueden ser divididos según la base del material: acrílico o silicona.
