“…In mammals, the normal salivary glands host an indigenous population of immunocytes that can take the form of organized lymphoid tissue in both minor (4,22,23) and major (24) salivary glands in association with the duct system. Although lymphoid aggregations have not been reported in rodents, T and B cells and macrophages can be recovered from major salivary glands after enzymatic digestion (5,25), and the oral mucosa and its minor salivary gland network host populations of T and B lymphocytes and mast cells (19,(26)(27)(28). However, the strong preference of immunocytes for the vicinity of ducts and blood vessels argues in favour of an organized, although diffuse, immune system in mice.…”

“…Due to coating antibodies, a faint background was observed but positive cells could easily be discriminated over the background because of the high concentration of the specific labelled antibody at the cell surface. The ratio of L3T4+/Lyt-2.2+ cells found in the spleen (3,14) and the oral mucosa (3) was conserved among panned cells since L3T4+ panned cells were approximately twice as numerous as Lyt-2.2+ panned cells.…”

“…It contains a population of B lymphocytes associated with the minor salivary gland network (MSG-network) (I), macrophages (2) and a recently described population of Thy-1.2+ cells that is well compartmentalized in the oral epithelium and in the minor salivary glands (3). The majority of Thy-1.2+ cells either express the L3T4 or the Lyt-2.2 marker and are 2-3 times more numerous than B cells or macrophages (1,3). According to their incidence and distribution we hypothesized that they may play a part in local immune responses either as effector cells or as regulatory cells.…”
