TNF-α Antagonist Use and Risk of Hospitalization for Infection in a National Cohort of Veterans With Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract: Medications used to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may confer an increased risk of infection. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of veterans with RA followed in the United States Department of Veterans Affairs health care system from October 1998 through June 2005. Risk of hospitalization for infection associated with tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α antagonists therapy was measured using an extension of Cox proportional hazards regression, adjusting for demographic characteristics, comorbid illnesses, an… Show more

“…In the other registries and cohort studies, the increased age-related risk is conflicted. An increased risk of infection has been documented in a cohort of veterans and a retrospective cohort of Canadians age Ͼ66 years (18,19). No increased risk of infection with age was reported for the first time by Schneeweiss et al in a population of 15,597 patients age Ͼ75 years initiating anti-TNF therapy, and has also not been seen in the Swiss and Dutch anti-TNF registries (20 -22).…”
