To Be or Not to Be: Towards Stateless Interactive Drama

Abstract: Abstract. In this paper we investigate a new way to represent the narrative structure in interactive drama models. It consists in explicitly defining generic links between actions, rather than relying on states, as it is the case for other interactive narrative approaches. This new approach is especially promising in terms of authoring.

“…Many authors consider that if they can't define all "scenation" of the document, part by part, they are deprived of their creation. This is a major problem for researchers who are working on generative and interactive storytelling: what is the author's status in an automatic generation of documents (texts, dialogues, computers graphics...) (Szilas & Axelrad, 2009)? Yet the author holds a prominent position in the autonomous documents.…”

“…As a consequence, the player cannot direct the story unfolding in a considerable way. On the opposite, the emergent narrative theory [2,4,28,27] gives complete freedom to the player, who may deeply influence, through her/his actions, the evolution of the virtual world where s/he has been immersed. This means that the story will emerge from the player's interaction with the game, and the unfolding of the story is not based on any specific structure.…”
