To end disease tomorrow, begin with trials today: Digital strategies for increased awareness of a clinical trials finder

Abstract: Introduction:Individuals experiencing different medical conditions, as well as healthy volunteers, may often be interested in trial participation, and researchers similarly need to find participants to advance medical knowledge. The ResearchMatch (RM) Trials Today clinical trial searching tool leverages data to enable potential participants to look for trial opportunities relevant to their situation. To facilitate expanded use of this tool, we undertook a national digital public awareness campaign to increase… Show more

“…In a review, eighty-one out of 395 RCTs listed on ClinicalTrials.gov were discontinued early, mainly due to problems with recruitment [15]. Researchers have been increasingly evaluating the potential usefulness of complementing recruitment strategies, for example, with DT, in order to include the greatest possible diversity of participants in RCTs [16,17]. There is evidence that social media can be an excellent recruitment method for hard-to-reach populations [18].…”

“…Lack of information and understanding about research, and limited access to specialized care centers that serve as referral sources for clinical trials make it difficult to recruit minority populations [51,52]. Jerome et al by evaluating the use of DT as a strategy to increase patient access to ongoing RCTs, showed that digital media is a cost-effective vehicle to promote awareness of CT [16]. Classically, RCTs tend to have an investigator-centric approach.…”

“…Two site components were identified as posing a significant challenge to successful full-site translation. First, Trials Today at ResearchMatch [13], is a public-facing clinical trial search engine , and system-generated email messages (sign-up confirmation and study opportunity contact messages). Services also included copyediting and final proofreading by two or more translators.…”
