To Splice or to Transcribe: SKIP-Mediated Environmental Fitness and Development in Plants

Abstract: Gene expression in eukaryotes is controlled at multiple levels, including transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. The transcriptional regulation of gene expression is complex and includes the regulation of the initiation and elongation phases of transcription. Meanwhile, the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression includes precursor messenger RNA (pre-mRNA) splicing, 5′ capping, and 3′ polyadenylation. Among these events, pre-mRNA splicing, conducted by the spliceosome, plays a key role in … Show more

“…MAC3A and MAC3B (MOS4-associated complex 3A/B) are functionally redundant plant proteins which have so far mostly been studied for their role in miRNA biogenesis and plant immunity (Monaghan et al, 2009;Li et al, 2018). They co-immunoprecipitate with both SMB and the evolutionarily conserved SNW/SKI INTERACTING PROTEIN (SKIP) that is associated with the spliceosome through its interaction with SR45 (Wang et al, 2012;Li et al, 2016Li et al, , 2019Cao and Ma, 2019).…”

“…SNW domain in SKIP protein regulate pre-mRNA splicing and also was identified as a transcription factor of gene transcription activator in Paf1 complex, which is involved in transcription of FLOWERING LOCUS C and flowering in A. thaliana (10). It is involved in alternative splicing regulation of clock and salt tolerance-related genes in plants (141).…”

“…STM physically associates with various proteins to regulate meristem activity (Figure 3a). One is the SKI-INTERACTING PROTEIN (SKIP), a protein conserved in eukaryotes that regulates plant gene expression through both transcription regulation and mRNA splicing [32]. STM and SKIP can bind directly to the promoters of multiple STM target genes, and SKIP is proposed to act as an STM cofactor that recruits components of the transcriptional machinery, such as the RNA polymerase-associated factor 1 complex (Paf1c), to STM target genes to sustain SAM pluripotency [33].…”
