To thine own self be false: Self-deceptive enhancement and sexual awareness influences on mating success.

Abstract: Over 25 years ago, evolutionary biologist Robert Trivers proposed in the introduction to Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene that self-deception might facilitate otherdeception in intersexual competition and thereby be an unconscious adaptive mating strategy. Self-deception, or the unconscious deception of self through holding beliefs in the face of strong contrary evidence, may facilitate manipulation of others by concealing cues of cognitive load that generally accompany conscious deception. One prediction of … Show more

“…Several possible explanations can be offered for women's greater sense of impairment. It may be that, consistent with the general population (Lynn, Pipitone, & Keenan, 2014),men with ADHD have less insight into the impact their ADHD exerts on their functioning than women with ADHD. Another hypothesis is that the perceived social consequences of ADHD damage women's selfperceptions and feelings of competence to a greater extent than men's.…”

“…Mitchell (2000) proposed that self-deception refers to the fact that even though there are things that people insist are contrary to the facts, they still adhere to a positive belief in these things. The researchers summarized the previous studies on self-deception and found that self-deception is related to an individual’s sense of happiness, self-esteem, self-confidence, emotional memory, self-service bias, social thinking and altruistic behavior (Erez et al, 1995; Linton and Wiener, 2001; Mele, 2006; Lopez and Fuxjager, 2012; Lynn et al, 2014). Therefore, if self-deception can be properly used, it can have a positive impact on individuals and society.…”

“…Thus, our results also support the theory of Sloman et al (2010) that self-deception depends on ambiguous conditions. In addition, high self-awareness has been positively correlated with low self-deception (Lynn et al, 2014), and negative feedback might increase the level of awareness of self-competence to reduce positive beliefs in self-deception by improving self-perception.…”
