Tomato sucrose transporter SlSUT4 participates in flowering regulation by modulating gibberellin biosynthesis

Abstract: The functions of sucrose transporters (SUTs) differ among family members. The physiological function of SUT1 has been studied intensively, while that of SUT4 in various plant species including tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is less well understood. In this study, we characterized the function of tomato SlSUT4 in the regulation of flowering using a combination of molecular and physiological analyses. SlSUT4 displayed transport activity for sucrose when expressed in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), and it locali… Show more

“…Sucrose application at 50 mM promoted flowering even under the night break condition of the short day-induced Chrysanthemum 'Flora Yuuka' (Sun et al 2017). Increasing sucrose in the shoot apex by silencing the sucrose transporter in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) enhanced flowering (Liang et al 2023). Silencing the TREHALOSE-6-PHOSPHATE SYNTHASE 1 (TPS1), the synthase for sugar signal, delayed the flowering of Arabidopsis thaliana under an inductive photoperiod (Wahl et al 2013).…”

“…The BL21 bacteria were transformed with the fusion protein, and induction was carried out using constant shaking at 200 r/min and a temperature of 28°C for 8 h with an IPTG concentration of 0.5 m m . Liang's methodology for EMSA was followed (Liang et al., 2023). The mutation and cold probes employed for EMSA are found in Table S3.…”

“…The SlWRKY81 's cDNA was cloned into the pGADT7 vector, and each fragment of the SlSPDS2 promoter and SlNHX4 promoter was individually inserted into the pAbAi vector. After that, Liang's methodology for Y1H was followed (Liang et al., 2023). Table S1 lists the related primers.…”

“…Endogenous hormone levels play an important regulatory role in the process of plant flower bud differentiation [30]. ABA promotes flowering by inhibiting gibberellin biosynthesis, and indolepropionic acid (IPA) also delays flower senescence [31,32]. In Populus L., leaf morphology can be regulated by increasing the expression of IAA synthesis-related genes [33].…”
