Tomographic diagnostics of current distributions in a fuel cell stack

Abstract: SUMMARYA novel tomographic scheme for analysing the state of any single membrane electrode assembly (MEA) in a stack is suggested. Plates of very high conductivity placed between every fuel cell and slitted in an appropriate manner cause surface currents at well-defined locations of the stack. We show that knowing these surface currents, information about anomalies of the currents in a MEA can be obtained using the methods of tomography. The results are mathematically not unique. However, when assuming plausib… Show more

“…To find out if our scheme can detect these kinds of defects, a more detailed investigation, including the theory of tomography, needs to be done. Certainly, this is beyond the scope of this paper, but is discussed in a different paper [28]. Experiments corroborating the applicability of our scheme are done right now and results will be published as soon as they are available.…”

“…It should be mentioned that the situation becomes more complex if the damage is not local but extended or if several local damages occur at the same time. All these cases will be discussed in a another paper [28].…”

“…These approaches make impossible the study of many of the electrical interaction that can occur between the cells of a same stack. For diagnostic application and stack stabilization purpose, Hirschfeld et al [8] developed a 3D electrical model of PEMFC stack using the Finite Volume Method and whose equations in the MEA are more detailed in Ref. [9].…”

“…11 The current density coupling between cells in a stack has been addressed earlier in experimental 12 as well as in computational studies. 7,11,[13][14][15][16][17][18][19] It has been found that high electrical conductivities of bipolar plates 13,18 and small cell sizes 13 reduce the coupling between cells; however, an aggregate measure that can quantify the degree the coupling has not been determined. The aim of this paper is therefore to find such a measure, if it exists, with a view to determining a criterion for when two adjacent cells do not effect each other's local electrical behavior.…”
