Tomography analysis tool: an application for image analysis based on unsupervised machine learning

Abstract: We developed a graphical user interface (GUI) to analyse tomographic images of superconducting Nb3Sn wires designed for the next generation accelerator magnets. The Tomography Analysis Tool (TAT) relies on the k-means algorithm, an unsupervised machine learning technique which is widely used to partition images into separated clusters. The GUI is compatible with both Linux and Windows operating systems. The software reliability was tested by optical inspecting the tomographic images superimposed on the cluster… Show more

“…A picture can be selected as the highest insulation goodness of any superconducting device, and when each sample is manufactured and an image is taken from it, the picture can be decomposed to some data and be compared with the basic picture to show the insulation goodness. The findings of such an image-processing approach can be used to correct the insulating process in the manufacturing procedure [368][369][370][371].…”

“…The equivalent stress is calculated by dividing the applied force by the groove dimension. At 19 T after unloading the force, the measured permanent I c degradation was 15% of the initial I c , and a reduction of B c2 of ∼0.5 T was also recorded [37]. The latter information indicates that plastic deformation of the copper matrix is present and plays a relevant role in the degradation of the electrical performance of this specific RRP wire.…”

“…The cracks do not reduce the effective Nb 3 Sn cross section, therefore the plastic deformation of the copper and the consequent B c2 reduction must be the major responsible for the critical current irreversible decrease in this type of wire when submitted to transverse loads. In a future publication, which is under preparation, it will be proven that the main reason for the I c irreversible degradation on RRP wires is the copper plasticization [37]. These residual stresses are already relevant above 140 MPa, while cracks appear at far higher pressures in the range 200-250 MPa.…”

“…The wire volume examined by tomography corresponds to a scan length of about 1.5 mm. More details about the methods of detection and image recognition are reported in the [29,33,34]. Only very few cracks are present in the examined sample after unload from 240 MPa.…”
