Tongue Shape Dynamics in Swallowing Using Sagittal Ultrasound

Abstract: Ultrasound imaging is simple, repeatable, gives real-time feedback, and its dynamic soft tissue imaging may make it superior to other modalities for swallowing research. We tested this hypothesis and measured certain spatial and dynamic aspects of the swallowing to investigate its efficacy. Eleven healthy adults wearing a headset to stabilize the probe participated in the study. Both thickened and thin liquids were used, and liquid bolus volumes of 10 and 25 ml were administered to the subjects by using a cup.… Show more

“…Articulatory data have been extracted using SLURP (Laporte & Ménard, 2018). Tongue contour were assessed on horizontal positions of specific flesh points (Ménard et al, 2013;Ohkubo & Scobbie, 2019) as well as on MCI (Dawson et al, 2015).…”

“…Researchers and clinical linguists have widely adopted the use of lingual ultrasound for different applications. Some of these applications include using it as a visual feedback for second language teaching [ 65 , 66 ], speech remediation to correct articulation for people with speech disabilities [ 67 ], speech-related disorders such as autism [ 4 , 68 , 69 ], articulation research and analysis [ 10 , 65 , 70 ], swallowing studies [ 71 ], tongue 3D modelling [ 72 ], and silent speech interface [ 7 , 73 , 74 , 75 ]. Furthermore, ultrasound imaging analysis is used in many applications in medical imaging analysis for object detection and segmentation.…”

“…Speaking and mastication (anterior tongue) require fine motor movement, while upper airway maintenance (posterior tongue) requires sustained muscle tone. As a result, the anterior and posterior portions of the tongue are not only physiologically, but anatomically different 8 …”
