Tonsillektomie: offizielle Zahlen und Trends in Deutschland

Abstract: chronic tonsillitis was less frequently diagnosed and surgically treated in terms of tonsillectomy (with or without adenoidectomy), particularly in female patients. In contrast, the number of tonsillotomies increased continullay, particularly in male patients. Peritonsillar abscess was diagnosed and surgically treated in a constant number of patients in the yearly comparison. “…Hemorrhage following tonsillectomy, which is one of the most common procedures in otolaryngology, remains a challenge because it is potentially life-threatening and because of the need for surgical revision for bleeding control in 1% of cases [ 1 ]. Therefore, many efforts have been made to minimize the risk of posttonsillectomy hemorrhage (PTH).…”

“…The most common consequences and complications of tonsillectomy are swallowing disorders, pain, and postoperative hemorrhage (PTH) which could be potentially life-threatening. According to the data of the Federal Office of Statistics in Germany, the rate of PTH is 5.98% in Germany, of which a sixth required return to the operating theater for revision surgery [ 1 ]. Therefore, in view of the annually performed procedures in the OECD, about 94,000 PTHs are to be expected.…”

“…It is therefore remarkable that despite a lack of evidence abscesstonsillectomy prevails at least in some countries [10,12]. Unfortunately, NA is not documented Return-to-theatre 0 (0 %)…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, NA is not a standard procedure in University and Academic Teaching Hospitals in Germany. Interestingly, ID is increasingly performed in Germany [12], a method which has been quoted to be equally effective as NA [2,9,14]. However, replacing abscesstonsillectomy by ID resulted in a significant decrease of bleeding complications (0.3 vs. 5.1 %) but also in the need of a painful re-draining of the abscess cavity in approximately 20 % of patients [11].…”
