Tool wear mechanisms in the machining of steels and stainless steels

Abstract: In machining processes, tool performance is measured by the tool life, which is determined by the tool wear rate. This rate is strongly dependent on the tool wear mechanisms that occur in a specific process. Moreover, determining the wear mechanism is a fundamental task for the development of cutting tools. However, the tool wear mechanism depends on factors such as the workpiece material, the cutting operation, the properties of the tool material, the cutting conditions, and the cooling/lubrication system. Th… Show more

“…Nickel alloys present high hardening ratio. Consequently the formed burrs are very hard and have a furrowing effect at the height of the depth of cut, causing a large notch wear 21 . The use of low cutting speeds proved to be extremely harmful and propitious to this wear.…”

“…Thus, it enabled the nitrogen to reduce the friction at the interface between the tool and the chip [12]. Furthermore, the high nitrogen gas pressure led to improve the surface quality of the machined workpiece and prolong the tool life when it was used with the oil-mist [13,14]. This could be due to the fast cleaning of metal residual left on the surface of the workpiec by the chip during machining.…”
