Tooth Complications after Orthodontic Miniscrews Insertion

Abstract: Orthodontic miniscrews (OM) are widely used in modern orthodontic clinical practice to improve skeletal anchorage and have a high safety profile. A complication at the time of OM insertion is tooth root perforation or periodontal ligament trauma. Rarely, OM injury can cause permanent damage, such as ankylosis, osteosclerosis, and loss of tooth vitality. The aim of this work was to analyze potential risks and dental complications associated with the use of OMs. A search of the PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, … Show more

“…When dealing with patients with infraoccluded deciduous molars, a correct clinical approach would involve extracting these deciduous elements, if infraocclusion > 2–3 mm, before the growth spurt, and being optimistic about primary teeth with a short root. A primary element in proper occlusion with a short root can serve as an effective (semi) permanent replacement [ 50 , 55 ].…”

“…While good at preventing WS, sealants do peel off over time, predominantly in the gum area, leaving the enamel exposed to plaque and acid bacteria. Sealants like ProSeal have been proven to totally prevent mineral loss from enamel if they stay on the tooth surface, but the application of the product should be repeated every few months [ 48 ].…”

“…The modalities of space recovery in mixed dentition are: arch perimeter increment, reduction in mesiodistal widths of teeth and serial extractions [ 2 , 43 , 44 ]. In the upper arch, the expansions are quite stable, but inferiorly, it is universally recognized that the expansion of the intercanine diameter always recurs, whereas expansion at the molar level is quite stable, which should be considered [ 27 , 45 , 46 , 47 ]. The space that can be recovered in the lower arch depends on the type of sector: in general, in the posterior sector, utilizing a lip bumper-style device, it is possible to recover a maximum of 2 mm of space per molar distalization in the posterior regions [ 48 ].…”
