Tooth‐related risk factors for tooth loss in community‐dwelling elderly people

Abstract: The findings of this study suggest that tooth loss is the result of complex interactions of tooth-related factors. Several tooth-related variables including multirooted teeth, abutments, and single crowns were found to be possible risk factors for tooth loss. Thus, these findings confirm and underline the potential benefit of minimizing prosthetic treatment of molars.

“…Functional questions related to oral health, such as the necessity of using dentures, can influence the association between the impact of oral health and QoL on older adults . Previous studies carried out in countries such as the USA and Japan have identified a considerable prevalence of edentulism among older adults, a condition that can influence mastication as well as cause other functional limitations and, consequently, compromise QoL . We point out that, although this is a subjective question, disorders that are perceived to compromise QoL could stimulate the search for medical or dental care …”

Teeth that had been restored using single artificial crowns and those used as abutments for removable and fixed partial dentures were considered to be remaining . For bivariate analysis, the numbers of remaining teeth were categorised into three groups: 1‐9, 10‐19 and ≥20.…”
