Tooth Surface Loss and Associated Risk Factors in Northern Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Aim. To evaluate tooth surface loss (TSL) severity and associated risk factors in a representative sample of Saudi adults. Materials and Methods. Four hundred TSL patients (200 females and 200 males) participated in this study. Each patient completed a comprehensive questionnaire interview (using a modified Tooth wear Assessment Questionnaire) and then examined for the severity of TSL (using ordinal scale). Results. Seventy-five percent of participants demonstrated attrition, 90% had erosion, 15% had abrasion,… Show more

“…The most common type of tooth surface loss presented in this study was attrition (40%) and this is similar to result of previous studies in Nigeria [4] [18]. This is however, contrary to report of a study in Saudi-Arabia [22] and a European's study [23] in which erosion accounted for 90% and 70% of tooth surface loss respectively. The disparity in the findings could be due to differences in the main etiological factors of TSL in different part of the world.…”

“…8 These findings are in line with the other studies. 2,6,7,9 Another possible cause of clenching of teeth could be psychosocial, such as one's stress adaptive capacity especially among industrial workers, which may play an important role in tooth wear. 15 Although an association between tooth wear and clicking of temporomandibular joint has been reported, most studies indicate that it is not a risk factor for tooth wear.…”

“…1 It can be defined as an irreversible, multi factorial and destructive loss of dental hard tissues caused by mechanical and/or chemical processes in the absence of caries or trauma. [2][3][4][5][6][7] It is more evident in recent years due to the current substantial decline in dental caries and people becoming more interested in keeping their dentition healthy for a longer time which could be exposed to wear. activity, environment, occupation, oral health behaviour, medicaments, gastrointestinal problems, and acid regurgitation among the risk factors that contribute to tooth wear.…”

“…The acidity of gastric contents might be below pH 1, and thus regurgitation can be extremely detrimental to the teeth and lead to dental erosion . Gastrointestinal problems were found to be the most common medical condition that affected patients with tooth surface loss . The prevention of dental erosion has, therefore, become an important goal for dental researchers and practitioners.…”
