Topical 0.03% atropine vs. 15% aluminum chloride in treating multiple eccrine hidrocystomas: A randomized single blind controlled study

Abstract: Background:Multiple eccrine hidrocystomas pose a significant treatment challenge due to their facial location and tendency to scar after traditional surgical and other destructive modalities.Aims:To compare two frequently used non-destructive therapeutic modalities.Materials and Methods:Thirty patients with multiple eccrine hidrocystomas were enrolled in the study. They used topical 0.03% Atropine cream and 15% AlCl3 solution on left and right sides of their face randomly for 4 weeks. All the patients were vis… Show more

“…Multiple eccrine hidrocystomas have also been successfully treated with topical application of 15% aluminium chloride. Topical 0.03% atropine was found to be just as effective as 15% aluminium chloride in a randomised, single-blind controlled study at reducing the size and number of eccrine hidrocystomas [12]. In addition to these forms of therapy, the underlying cause of the lesion should also be taken into account.…”

“…The review of relevant articles revealed 55 reported patients with multiple eccrine hidrocystomas treated with topical anticholinergic compounds (Table 1). Two controlled studies were detected; one with atropine sulphate 0.03 % cream versus aluminum chlorine 15 % in 29 patients assessed marked superiority of atropine sulphate (50 % vs. 30 % mean reduction of lesions, P < 0.05) and another with atropine sulphate 1 % versus scopolamine butylbromide 40 % versus ipratropium bromide 1 % in five patients evaluated superiority of ipratropium bromide (73 % vs. 70 % vs. 98 %, control 0 % median improvement, P = 0.021) [5,19]. Side effects of atropine were concentration-dependent (0.03-1 % solution, cream or ointment), including blurred vision, dry skin, mydriasis and nausea.…”
