Topical immunology of nasal allergy and mucosal IgE antibodies

Abstract: In the present study, the in vitro tissue-radioallergosorbent test (t-RAST) was performed in two groups of patients: one with perennial attacks of sneezing, serous hypersecretion and nasal congestion, the other with nasal congestion only. The results obtained were compared with those obtained by a series of conventional allergy tests. We then found that t-RAST provided objective data comparable to those obtained with serum-RAST and that the t-RAST is a reliable means of quantitatively detecting specific IgE an… Show more

“…This value was much smaller compared with that of inferior turbinate mucosa (104.6 ± 46.9 PRU/g) demonstrated by our previous study [Ohashi et al, 1985], It is tempting to suggest that IgE antibody located in nasal polyps may have been consequent on transfer of IgE antibody produced elsewhere and that the mucosa of nasal polyps may not actively synthesize IgE antibodies.…”

“…Thus, much remains to be established as to the interrelation between nasal allergies and nasal polyps. The present study was aimed at ascertaining by the t-RAST [Ohashi et al, 1983[Ohashi et al, , 1984[Ohashi et al, , 1985 whether and, if at all, to what extent IgE antibody might be de tected in the mucosa of nasal polyps of pa tients with nasal allergies and in those with out nasal allergies.…”

“…As previously reported, the t-RAST shows an excellent specificity in diagnosing nasal allergies unequivocally and easily [Ohashi et al 1985b].…”
