Topical Treatment of Second-Degree Burn Wounds with Lactobacillus plantarum Supernatant: Phase I Trial

Abstract: Scan to discover onlineBackground & Objective: A burn wound is sterile immediately after injury, but opportunistic bacteria colonize the wound within 48 to 72 hours after the burn, causing delayed or failed burn wound healing. In addition, the presence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens doubles the treatment problems. Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) is a well-known antibacterial and healing agent that could be used topically to treat burn wounds. “…On the other hand, studies in animal models have demonstrated that the topical acidification of wounds results in beneficial effects promoting epithelialization, collagen deposition, and healing, with best outcomes observed with solutions at pH 3.5-4.0 [42,43]. For all these reasons, the results obtained herein support the therapeutic use of acidic L. rhamnosus GG CFS in wound care, providing experimental evidence for the encouraging results obtained in few clinical trials that used topical lactobacilli or their supernatants for the management of infected wounds [25,44].…”

“…Nowadays, bacteriotherapy is used as one of the new alternatives against pathogenic organisms. In this method, probiotics, as beneficial and safe bacteria, are often used with or without their supernatant to treat or prevent infections ( 4 , 5 ). Since there is no clear standard for applying probiotic formulations for antimicrobial therapy, it is needed to address existing gaps in this field.…”
