“…Although experimental and clinical data considering the effect of TPM on neuropsychological factors is very controversial, our findings support the suggestion that TPM does not affect attention 17 while it improves spatial learning and memory in rats with postoperative cognitive dysfunction due to suppressed neuronal apoptosis in the hippocampal tissues and decreased level of expression of tumor-necrosis-factor, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6. 18 However, our results appear to differ from clinical findings, which suggests that TPM may produce a relatively more cognitive impairment and/or psychomotor slowing as well as language problems than other AEDs. 19 In the present study, we have demonstrated that LCM can produce different effects on inhibitory avoidance performance in intact rats and pilocarpine-treated rats.…”

“…Topiramate is a widely used in the clinical practice AED which effects on cognitive functions are still controversial. Our data is in agreement with other studies showing that topiramate improve spatial learning and memory in an experimental model of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (Su et al 2019). Its neuroprotective effects are related with reduced expression of caspase-3 in the hippocampus, and decreased neuroinflammation as well (Chen et al 2009;Ye et al 2014;Su et al 2019).…”

“…The activation of microglia may play a key role in the occurrence of POCD as activated microglia are now recognized as the main source of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in the central nervous system (CNS) ( Block et al, 2007 ; Lu B. et al, 2020 ). Neuroinflammation and microglial activation trigger and amplify a complex cascade of reactions, including immune response activation, microcirculatory changes, increased hippocampal oxidative stress, and increased blood–brain barrier permeability ( Su et al, 2020 ). The pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α were statistically significantly increased in the brains of rats exposed to sevoflurane in a number of studies ( Wadhwa et al, 2017 ; Huang L. et al, 2018 ).…”
