“…The availability of propagules has also been emphasized as a key factor for succession on glacier forelands, and the dispersal ability of species may be more important than facilitation in determining a particular successional sequence (Chapin et al, 1994;Fastie, 1995). It is widely accepted that physical environmental factors are more important than biotic factors during the early stages of succession in determining the distribution and abundance of plants (Reader and Buck, 1986). Biological processes become more important later in succession when development of the vegetation begins to transform the microenvironment (Matthews, 1992;Vetaas, 1994;Totland et al, 2004).…”

“…The characteristics are grouped according to their overall effects. grasslands, seedling regeneration for most species, including several Hieracium species, is typically greater in gaps than in intact vegetation (e.g., Goldberg & Werner 1983;Reader & Buck 1986;Wilczynski 1987). Overall, our results suggest that in low-productivity grasslands, e.g., unfertilised short-tussock grasslands, seedling regeneration may be influenced more by physical hazards than by the availability of gaps (Ryser 1993).…”

“…For Hieracium floribundum in well established populations, fine-scale topographic differences in abundance within an area of only 2 ha reflected differential wind dispersal of seed (Reader & Buck 1986). …”

“…The seed rain of a community has been documented in a few cases; in forest understorey (Wagner 1965;Falin'ska 1968), early glacial succession (Ryvarden 1971) and in grassland (Rabinowitz & Rapp 1980). Reader & Buck (1986) found that patchiness in the distribution of Hieracium in abandoned pasture could be explained partly by heterogeneity in the seed rain. However, there appears to be only one detailed community study that reports both seed rain and recruitment.…”
