Topology optimization with efficient rules of cellular automata

Abstract: Purpose -Biologically inspired techniques like cellular automata (CA) are gaining nowadays attention of designers. This is because they are effective, do not require gradient information, and one can easily combine this type of algorithm with any finite element structural analysis code. The purpose of this paper is to develop a CA algorithm based on novel local rules oriented at solving compliance-based topology optimization problems. Design/methodology/approach -The design domain is divided into lattice of ce… Show more

“…Generally, the type of topology optimization may be classified into two categories, i.e. topology optimization of discrete structures (Hajela and Lee, 1995; Rozvany, 1996) and topology optimization of continuum structures (Bendsøe and Kikuchi, 1988; Suzuki and Kikuchi, 1991; Xie and Steven, 1993, 1994, 1997; Andreassen et al , 2011; Huang and Xie, 2010; Zhu et al ., 2015; Wang et al ., 2003; Guest, 2015; Özkal and Uysal, 2016; Maleki and Shariat, 2015; Cai et al ., 2014; Bochenek and Tajs-Zielinska, 2013). The former is to search for the optimal spatial order and connectivity of the bars.…”

“…In particular, this concept has been successfully applied to topology optimization, which was illustrated in a series of published papers, e.g., [26][27][28][29][30][31]. In particular, the efficiency of the Cellular Automata method is discussed in [32].…”

“…A characteristic feature of the CA is the modeling of complex systems using a simple set of local rules. This opportunity attracted researchers from various disciplines, such as physics, biology, social sciences, transport, logistics [5]. CA is a mathematical idealization of physical systems, in which the structure of image is divided into lattices of cells whose states are updated synchronously in discrete time according to some local rules.…”
