Topology-Scaling Identification of Layered Solids and Stable Exfoliated 2D Materials

Abstract: The Materials Project crystal structure database has been searched for materials possessing layered motifs in their crystal structures using a topology-scaling algorithm. The algorithm identifies and measures the sizes of bonded atomic clusters in a structure's unit cell, and determines their scaling with cell size. The search yielded 826 stable layered materials that are considered as candidates for the formation of two-dimensional monolayers via exfoliation. Density-functional theory was used to calculate th… Show more

“…These candidates are listed in the SM alongside with the computed band gaps. Note that, as shown in the SM, some overlapping entries across the databases [30][31][32][33] are consistently identified to be topological in spite of their slight structural differences. These materials are particularly promising candidates and deserve future comprehensive study.…”

“…Ashton and coworkers [156] proposed the topology-scaling algorithm (TSA) to identify layered materials from the ICSD database. The TSA first calculates the materials bonding, based on covalent radii, to identify atoms clusters.…”

“…The family of two-dimensional (2D) crystals has been growing with an impressive speed over the last few years, with many new systems have already been introduced [1][2][3][4][5] , while many more have been predicted and await discovery [6][7][8][9] . The range of properties covered by such materials is now extremely large: metals, semimetals, topological insulators, semiconductors and insulators -all are present within this class of crystals 2,10 .…”
