Torsional wave focusing in cylindrical structures with the conformal gradient-index phononic crystal lens

Abstract: We present torsional wave focusing in cylindrical structures integrated with conformal gradient-index phononic crystal (GRIN-PC) lenses. The mechanical lens modifies the refractive characteristics of propagating waves along the axial direction such that the torsional wave energy focuses at a desired point with an increased amplitude. In this paper, our main goal is to exploit the GRIN-PC concept for amplification of the fundamental torsional wave mode, namely, T(0,1), which is especially favorable in the guide… Show more

“…However, polarising a longer piezoelectric transducer is more difficult. Inspired by the performance of a shear-type piezoelectric wafer active sensor, Okudan et al [75] utilised d 35 piezoelectric actuators to excite the torsional guided wave T(0,1) in a pipe-like structure, which was [76].…”

“…arrangement. In the past few decades, PnCs have come into the spotlight in the science community due to their properties of unorthodoxly controlling wave-energy flow in elastic realms, including the gradient refractive index [5], negative refraction [6], mode conversion [7], and collimation [8]. Inspired by the fact that ordinary structures do not implement these intriguing physical phenomena, PnCs have recently presented the feasibility of opening a new avenue in the development of new conceptual products in engineering fields [9][10][11][12].…”

“…For example, Okudan at al. (Okudan, Danawe, Ozevin, & Tol, 2021) presented periodic structure, consisting of cylindrical pillars, which focusing first mode of the torsional wave in certain point to increase the amplitude, which increases signal-to-noise ratio. Chen at al.…”
