“Total displacement of curved surface sliders under nonseismic and seismic actions: A parametric study”

Abstract: The re-centring capability is recognized as a fundamental function of any effective isolation system, not only because it is associated to small or negligible deformation at the end of the earthquake but rather because it prevents displacement build up that may limit the capability of the structure to withstand aftershocks and future earthquakes. The current Eurocode recommends to estimate the maximum total displacement of the isolated system as the superposition of the nonseismic offset displacement resulting… Show more

“…The pulse-index was defined based on the ratio between the duration of the ground motion and the time interval during which most of the seismic energy is imparted to a structure. Quaglini et al (2017) illustrated that the predictions of this approach are in good agreement with those of Baker (2007). The most salient characteristic of many (not all) NF excitations is the occurrence of a large velocity pulse at the beginning of the time history of the record in the FD orientation.…”

“…In this approach, a ground motion is classified as pulse-like if its velocity time-history contains a pulse that is a large portion of the ground motion itself. It is worthwhile noting that a more recent criterion, denoted as pulse-index, was proposed by Quaglini et al (2017) for the classification of the pulse-like characteristic of earthquake ground motions. The pulse-index was defined based on the ratio between the duration of the ground motion and the time interval during which most of the seismic energy is imparted to a structure.…”

“…Friction pendulum system (FPS) represents a very effective technique for the seismic isolation of building frames and infrastructure . Over the years, several studies have examined modeling aspects of these devices (e.g., Mokha et al, Constantinou, Mokha, et al, Constantinou, Whittaker, et al, Quaglini et al, and Jangid) and other works investigated the effects of the variation of the system and FP isolator parameters and of the seismic input on the seismic performance. Structural reliability methods and reliability‐based analysis have also been presented by Ayyub and McCuen and Lin and Cai, and reliability analysis and reliability‐based optimization of base‐isolated systems including the main uncertainties have been performed by Chen et al, Alhan and Gavin, Zou et al, and Mishra et al A nondimensional form of the motion equations governing the dynamic response of an equivalent two‐degree‐of‐freedom (2dof) model equipped with FPS isolators has been proposed by Castaldo and Tubaldi .…”

“…The device in this case acts as a jack for the recentering of the bridge. Detail on re-centering capability can be found in Quaglini et al (2017), where the re-centering capability is recognized as a fundamental function of any effective isolation system. Furthermore, in Figure 11, the term experimental must be understood as a model in which the laboratory experimental curves of the devices were used with respect to the model with the nominal law; moreover, Takeda's curve for pier 13 is shown in Figure 11.…”
