Total energy expenditure assessed by salivary doubly labelled water analysis and its relevance for short‐term energy balance in humans

Abstract: The DLW method in humans can be reliably applied using saliva as sampling fluid. TEI-TEE as well as AEE contributes significantly to changes in fat mass over an 8-day period.

“…Daily energy expenditure was calculated using the doublylabeled water method as previously described by our group (Guidotti et al, 2013(Guidotti et al, , 2016. Determination of 2 H/ 1 H and 18 O/ 16 O ratios in saliva and blood samples were performed at the ESRIG Center for Isotope Research, University of Groningen.…”

“…The body dilution space (N) can be measured based on the plateau method (equation ( 6)) or on the intercept method (equation ( 7)), and the total body water is calculated using equation (9). In figure 4 we compare the body water percentage (water / mass) results calculated by TLW with those by EchoMRI.…”

“…The 2 H and 18 O abundances of body fluids are measured from the initial to the final time points, and then the isotope elimination rates can be determined. The difference between these two turnover rates is then proportional to the CO2 production (rCO2), which can be further converted to energy expenditure if the composition of the food intake is known 1,4,[7][8][9] .…”
