Total Energy Expenditure Assessment in Elite Junior Basketball Players

Abstract: An accurate assessment of total energy expenditure (TEE) during a competitive season is required. We aimed to validate TEE estimated by self-reported energy intake (EI) and the dietary reference intake (DRI) method in 19 elite basketball players (aged 16-18 years) using doubly labeled water (DLW) as the reference method. The DRI models and EI from dietary records over a 7-day period were simultaneously assessed for TEE estimation. Resting energy expenditure was assessed by indirect calorimetry. Fat and fat-fre… Show more

“…After a fasting baseline urine sample was collected, the specific gravity (USG) was determined using a refractometer (Urisys 1100, Roche Diagnostics, Portugal) to ensure that all athletes were euhydrated (USG < 1.010) [20]. The coefficient of variation (CV) of the urine specific gravity procedure in our laboratory based on 10 adults is 0.1% [21].…”

“…Urine and diluted dose samples were prepared for 1 H/ 2 H analysis using the equilibration technique of Prosser and Scrimgeour [22], using procedures described elsewhere [23]. The CV based on 10 repeated measures for TBW with the stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry in this laboratory is 0.3% [21].…”

“…Meanwhile, the daily energy needs of tall (> 195 cm) male basketball players have been estimated at > 5000 kcal (Martinchik et al, 2003), with a recently conducted study of elite male junior basketball players (16 to 17 years) using a doubly labeled water method reporting a mean daily energy expenditure of 4626 kcal (Silva et al, 2013).…”

“…The DEE of competitive athletes depends to a great extent on how much energy they use during training. Because of the demands of the sport discipline and the stage of the training cycle, training IJOMEH 2019;32 1Despite the increasing number of international publications on energy expenditure for athletes representing different sports and events [8,[18][19][20][22][23][24][25][26], only few research reports present the real levels of the TEE and DEE for Polish competitive athletes. Therefore, this study was undertaken to assess the TEE of Polish competitive athletes engaged in different types of endurance and power sports with respect to their DEE.…”
