Total Factor Efficiency Study on China’s Industrial Coal Input and Wastewater Control with Dual Target Variables

Abstract: After decades of economic development in China, its energy consumption still relies heavily on coal, and the dominant segment of our economy-the industrial sectors with large coal input-have caused massive wastewater pollution. To provide a decision-making basis for the sustainable development of Chinese industry and economy, this paper selected 39 industrial sectors in China and studied their Total Factor Efficiency (TFE) using Dual Target Variables of coal input and wastewater control during 2003-2014. The r… Show more

“…In the field of public health sustainable development, scholars are increasingly concerned with how to ensure patients can quickly obtain the desired high-quality health services in the context of the general rise in medical expenditures [24][25][26][27]. Therefore, the hierarchical medical policy of a national or regional medical service system is now a hot topic in academic circles [28][29][30][31][32].…”

“…The degree of coordinated development of the ecological environment takes into account ecological pressure, ecological overload, resource utilization and a moderate population, so there are six indicators: green coverage rate (%), total population (10,000 people), land utilization (%) [51], SO 2 emissions per unit of GDP (kg/10,000 RMB) [52], wastewater discharge per unit of GDP (kg/10,000 RMB) [8,9] and efficient utilization of energy resources. “…Sustainable urbanization is an effective way to promote sustainable urban development [4,5]. China's rapid economic growth has also produced severe environmental pollution, such as water [6][7][8] and air pollution [9,10], energy shortages [11,12] and loss of biodiversity [13] (see Figure 1). These environmental problems have seriously affected cities' sustainable development and even created health risks.…”

“…The Chinese economy has maintained rapid growth since the reform and opening up in 1978. However, along with rapid growth, environmental issues such as air pollution have become increasingly prominent, seriously threatening the urban environment and quality of life [1][2][3][4]. In order to control air pollution, China has taken various measures [5][6][7][8], in which whistleblowing is a pollution control measure with Chinese characteristics [9].…”
