TOTAL HEMOCYTES, GLUCOSE HEMOLYMPH, AND PRODUCTION PERFORMANCE OF SPINY LOBSTER Panulirus homarus CULTURED IN THE INDIVIDUAL COMPARTMENTS SYSTEM

Abstract: Cannibalism can cause high mortality in a lobster culture. To prevent cannibalism, an artificial shel-ter is needed like the individual compartments system (ICS) to ensure that there is no contact bet-ween lobsters. This study aimed to evaluate the application of ICS on total hemocytes glucose hemo-lymph, production performance, and determine the shape of more effective ICS to minimize stress level of lobster. The treatments used for various application shape of ICS was tubular ICS, triangle ICS, square ICS, a… Show more

“…This was seen from the green lobster's average weight gain when it was sampled once every week. This is consistent with Pratiwi et al (2016) who suggest that the green lobsters kept for 60 days using a compartment system show no significantly different growths in both their length and weight. Note: Values followed by the same letter are not significantly different according to Duncan's multiple range test at the 95% confidence level…”

“…The low survival rate obtained in the K treatment was thought to be due to the effect of feeding flesh mussels, which stimulated their instincts, or the cannibalistic nature of lobster seeds to do cannibalism. According to Pratiwi et al (2016), high mortality is generally caused by cannibalism. Cannibalism appears in healthy lobsters, while the prey is weak because they are in moderate condition or after molting.…”

“…Various studies that examine stress levels have been carried out, are using hemolymph as an indicator to analyze total hemocytes and also hemolymph glucose levels. The total hemocyte count (THC) is a parameter that can be used as an indicator of stress in crustaceans (Arifin et al, 2014;Adiyana et al, 2014;Celi et al, 2015;Pratiwi et al, 2016). In addition, metabolic products such as hemolyzed glucose can be used to determine stress levels in crustaceans due to treatment in rearing, pollutants, handling, environmental changes, and post-transportation (Lorenzon et al, 2007;Gulec and Aksu 2012;Bislimi et al, 2013;Arifin et al, 2014).…”

“…Meskipun demikian, budidaya intensif udang vaname memiliki beberapa kendala teknis yang perlu diperhatikan. Salah satu tantangan utama adalah tingginya tingkat kanibalisme dalam populasi udang, seperti yang telah dibahas oleh Pratiwi et al (2016) dan Rachmawati et al (2021). Kanibalisme sering kali terkait dengan faktor genetik dan perilaku hidup udang (Rachmawati et al, 2021).…”
