Touching the Lived Body in Patients with Medically Unexplained Symptoms. How an Integration of Hands-on Bodywork and Body Awareness in Psychotherapy may Help People with Alexithymia

Abstract: Medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) are a considerable presenting problem in general practice. Alexithymia and difficulties with mental elaboration of bodily arousal are hypothesized as a key mechanism in MUS. In turn, this inability influences the embodied being and participating of these patients in the world, which is coined as ‘the lived body’ and underlies what is mostly referred to as body awareness (BA). The present article explores a more innovative hypothesis how hands-on bodywork can influence BA an… Show more

“…Other literature has commented on possible optimal doses when considering MT; Brattberg (1999) Moving away from the biomechanical explanatory model for MT, research has provided the notion of MT as an 'interoceptive generator' driving neuroaffective processes of physiological self regulation (Courtois 2015, Calsius et al 2016, and LaPierre 2003. This perspective positions MT as an appropriate therapeutic tool for the proposed lack of neurodevelopmental self soothing systems, thought to be a risk factor for development of FM (Low & Schweinhardt 2011).…”

“…Body contact, touch and closeness are difficult issues for patients with mental health to cope with. Touching has a therapeutic effect (Calsius et al, 2016, Staub, 2019, however touch and closeness should be used consciously and in a controlled-manner in therapy since they can also have a negative influence (Potz, 2009;Staub, 2019). Physiotherapists are trained in using hands-on and hands-off techniques (i.e.…”
