This study identifies the management functions performed in non‐profit ecosanctuaries relevant to tourism in New Zealand. Following a pragmatic qualitative approach, semi‐structured interviews in and pertaining to eco‐sanctuaries were conducted. The findings are contextualised using principal‐agent and stewardship theory. The results reveal that non‐profit ecosanctuaries fulfil various functions alongside their core tasks, restoration and conservation. These are education and engagement with the volunteers, local community, and external stakeholders. Dependence on external funding and support is crucial for ecosanctuary management decision‐making. Lack of funding, among other factors, means that, in some instances, non‐profit organisations go beyond their core mandate by adding tourism as a commercial component to their activities. In doing so, these organisations commit to and undertake tasks such as visitor management, visitor impact management and tourism product development. Abstracta Diese Studieidentifiziert tourismusrelevante Managementfunktionen in lokalen non‐profit Naturschutzgebieten (‘ecosanctuaries’) in Neuseeland. QualitativeDaten wurden in Interviews erhoben. Die Ergebnisse werden mithilfe von principal‐agent theory sowie stewardship theory erklärt und kontextualisiert. Neben den Kernaufgaben in Renaturierung und Konservierung werdentourismusrelevante Funktionen in Bildung, Einbindung freiwilliger Mitarbeiter, lokaler Gruppen, sowie externer Akteure wahrgenommen. Die Abhängigkeit vonexterner Finanzierung und Unterstützung beeinflusst Entscheidungen des Managementsund bestimmt die Priorisierung von Naturschutz oder Tourismusfunktionen. Mangelnde Finanzierung führt neben anderen Faktoren dazu, dass gemeinnützige Organisationen in einigen Fällen über ihr Kernmandat hinausgehen, indem sie denTourismus als kommerzielle Komponente zu ihren Aktivitäten hinzufügen. Dabeiverpflichten sich diese Organisationen zu Aufgaben wie Besuchermanagementund/oder Produktentwicklung.

We are currently observing an international trend toward the establishment of non-profit-oriented, collaborative, and self-managed housing models. In this respect, knowledge concerning commoning has been circulating globally with initiatives mutually interacting. This is also true for the Mietshäuser Syndikat, which by now comprises some 171 permanently decommodified houses in Germany and has been transferred to the legal spaces of several neighboring states (Austria, France, Netherlands, and Czech Republic). Against this background, this paper addresses the question of how housing commons such as the Syndikat circulate translocally and what role spatial learning processes and network dynamics play in that regard. Conceptually, the study refers to the spatialities of social movements. Participatory observations at (inter-)national meetings as well as network graph-assisted interviews with key actors of the Syndikat model represent the central methods of the study. The findings illustrate that (1) solidary knowledge transfers via key actors who take on advisory and network functions, (2) open physical, and (3) virtual meeting points facilitate a moderate diffusion and permanent adaptations of the housing commons model. A process of “assembling, dis-assembling, re-assembling along the way” (McCann and Ward, 2012) thus unfolds. However, the findings illustrate that these mechanisms are not strong enough to compensate unequal relations of power and resources—among other in view of local pre-conditions.

This paper aims to use the methodological characteristics of ego-centred networks in studying teachers’ reflective thinking. This qualitative research illustrates how structured unstandardised network cards, including text corpora and visual elements, can be used in exploring the reflective thinking of a long-serving, experienced teacher. Structured unstandardised network cards ensured the openness of analysis through three factors: the undefined number of circles, the free association of topics concerning teachers’ activities, and comments on these topics. The basis of the analysis was a data-driven, inductive analysis of many concentric circles containing concepts and sectors and the text corpus of the commentary made during the creation of the network card. The reflections concerned the teacher’s career, position, and tasks in the institution. The results discovered the content nodes of reflective thinking, disclosed individual beliefs, and indicated the diversity of pedagogical knowledge. The concepts of ‘human’, ‘teacher’, ‘communication–cooperation’, and ‘renewal’ were included in a complex system by the network card sectors of ‘exercise’, ‘health’, ‘hobby’, ‘free time’, ‘soul’, and ‘family, friends, and colleagues’. Structured unstandardised network cards can explore teachers’ reflective thinking and broaden the research methodology of the topic.
