Touchscreen questionnaire patient data collection in rheumatology practice: Development of a highly successful system using process redesign

Abstract: Objective. While questionnaires have been developed to capture patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in rheumatology practice, these instruments are not widely used. We developed a touchscreen interface designed to provide reliable and efficient data collection. Using the touchscreen to obtain PROs, we compared 2 different workflow models implemented separately in 2 rheumatology clinics. Methods. The Plan-Do-Study-Act methodology was used in 2 cycles of workflow redesign. Cycle 1 relied on off-the-shelf questionnai… Show more

“…However, using HAQ as a generic disability measurement tool allows for comparison across different diseases . Being able to use a general HAQ rather than a specific HAQ will allow rheumatologists to implement standardized measures of patient‐reported outcomes routinely in a busy clinical practice and compare disability status across patients with various rheumatologic conditions, saving time and manpower needs . Our study provides further support for this approach, boosting confidence in researchers and clinicians using HAQ and further extends the socio‐cultural context whereby HAQ can be used.…”

“…Our previous work showed our ability to reliably and electronically capture patient reported data using a touchscreen questionnaire (9). Using Rheum-PACER, this patient information stream was combined with other relevant data streams from the EHR, the nurse, and the provider in a cohesive, provider centric, and patient centric manner.…”
