Tourism and protected areas: benefits beyond boundaries.

Abstract: This chapter highlights the management challenges facing protected areas and outlines the tourism issues covered at the Vth World Parks Congress. The themes of the presentations and discussions emphasized the significance of the Congress for tourism, and the relevance of tourism to the current conservation agenda. It is pointed out that successful park visitation is a critical function of parks and protected areas, for without satisfied visitors, parks and protected areas will cease to exist.

“…Then, natural areas managers have the challenge to ensure the visitors' safety, take care of the administration and handling of the activities seeking out the destination promotion, as well as to adopt safeguard measures to keep the nature protected (Bushell and Eagles, 2007). In this circumstance, the adoption of technologies can collaborate to soften this workload and help in the propagation of values associated with the concept of sustainable development among tourists, offering meaning to their experience (Prahalad and Ramaswamy, 2004;Ali and Frew, 2014).…”

“…Public-use trails can be treated as tourist attractions, which are part of the geographical territory of natural areas. Thus, pondered tourism and leisure as facilitators in the parks (Marion and Leung, 2001), these activities end up bringing economic and social benefits to protected areas and the surrounding community, contributing to the safeguarding of natural and cultural heritage (Bushell and Eagles, 2007).…”

“…However, visitor frequency is high in upland plains and pond areas (and less so for other types). Thus highly vulnerable areas are most important, where potentially increasing visitor numbers could impact other aspects of these areas (Pickering 2010), especially nature and landscape conservation (Bushell et al 2007). Thus, using these areas for tourism activities is very problematic and undesirable because of continued degradation of the natural environment (Boucníková and Ku~era 2005;Guth and Ku~era 2005).…”

“…The ongoing degradation of the environment and its urbanization are further increasing the value of the pleasure periphery in tourism (Bushell et al 2007). These kinds of environments are then increasingly exposed to pressures resulting from conflicts among different types of use of such areas (Jamal etal.…”
