This chapter delves into the intricate relationship between Industry 4.0 and the Indian tourism workforce, with a specific focus on faculty and student perceptions. Tourism is an important economic contributor in India, and this study explores how Industry 4.0, characterized by digital, physical, and biological convergence, impacts a sector recovering from the profound disruption caused by COVID-19. The challenges faced by the Indian tourism industry in adopting Industry 4.0 are elucidated, including the digital divide, workforce adaptability, job displacement concerns, and the need for updated education and training. Human-centric approaches are becoming increasingly important as the industry prepares for Industry 5.0, focusing on critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and sustainability. The Indian tourism sector’s journey towards a digital future is explored in the study, highlighting both the promises and challenges encountered along the way. A mixed-method research approach was used in the research combining in-depth interviews, surveys, and real-time case studies to glean nuanced insights. The recommendations include further examination of specific skills, teaching methodologies, and business challenges associated with Industry 4.0. This research informs educational practices, industry strategies, and governmental policies, offering a roadmap for a successful transition to the digital tourism era.

Purpose The purpose of this study, a current systematic literature review, is to synthesize the extant literature on consumers’ adoption of artificial intelligence and robotics (AIR) in the context of the hospitality and tourism sector (HATS) to gain a comprehensive understanding of it. This study also outlines insights for academia, practitioners, AI marketers, developers, designers and policymakers. Design/methodology/approach This study used a content analysis approach to conduct a systematic literature review for the period of 10 years (2011–2020) of the various published studies themed around consumer’s adoption of AIR in HATS. Findings The synthesis draws upon various factors affecting the adoption of AIR, such as individual factors, service factors, technical and performance factors, social and cultural factors and infrastructural factors. Additionally, the authors identified four major barriers, namely, psychological, social, financial, technical and functional that hinder the consumer’s adoption of artificial intelligence and robots in the hospitality and tourism industry. Originality/value To the best of the author’s/authors’ knowledge, this study is a first attempt to synthesize the factors that drive consumers’ adoption of artificial intelligence and robots in the hospitality and tourism industry. The present work also advances the tourism and consumer behavior literature by offering an integrated antecedent-outcome framework. PurposeThis paper contributes to addressing the research gap relating to the absence of a systematic analysis as to how new technologies can support the application of circular economic principles in the tourism industry through the promotion and articulation of a start-up ecosystem able to feed tourism organizations with circular economy solutions.Design/methodology/approachA sample from a population of start-ups, mainly Spanish, linked to the circular economy was gathered and analyzed; in addition to secondary data, a survey was designed and administered for the purpose of primary tourism industry data collection.FindingsA holistic start-up ecosystem for circular tourism is taking shape, facilitated by interactions between tourism and other economic activities, with the aim of tackling a diversity of circular economic objectives. The interest from start-ups in the circular economy for tourism seems to be rising, with attention given to certain technologies in line with the trend toward digitization and automation processes. Nevertheless, the potential for growth in the application of Technology 4.0 remains significant. Finally, the circular principle of reduction (energy and food waste) has emerged as a key objective in tourism.Originality/valueThe article provides insights on the application of circular economic principles in tourism through its interaction with a specialized start-up ecosystem able to support a paradigm shift toward circular tourism.
