Tourism industry at times of crisis: a bibliometric approach and research agenda

Abstract: PurposeThe COVID-19 pandemic caused unprecedented global turmoil and a halt on international tourism. This study aims to evaluate the scientific literature about tourism crisis and disasters and depicts how this research stream evolved in the face of economic, security, health, environmental or trust crises, further providing insights about a research agenda on this stream.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses bibliometric methods and topic models, specifically latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) methods to… Show more

“…The COVID-19 pandemic was a stark reminder of the way in which tourism supply and demand is sensitive to both natural and anthropogenic crises. As future pandemics, which may have similar devastating effects on the tourism industry, cannot be ruled out (Ivanova et al, 2021;Magno and Cassia, 2022), it is important to identify strategies and mechanisms that contribute towards the sector's recovery (Sampaio et al, 2022).…”

“…However, the growth of tourism crisis communication research over the years has resulted in a fragmented knowledge base (Liu‐Lastres, 2022). In addition, it appears that research development in THCCR is closely related to the emergence of crises in tourism (Sampaio et al, 2022; Ülker et al, 2022) such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), COVID‐19, crisis management and economic recession. Therefore, to gain a better understanding of the knowledge structure and evolution of THCCR, it is important to systematically review and organise research in tourism crisis communication, regardless of the occurrence of tourism crises.…”

“…After the global pandemic generated by COVID-19, the tourism sector needs to rethink changes in its actions and strategies that will contribute to achieving a more resilient sector and make it better prepared to combat the effects that crises with similar characteristics may trigger (Kumar et al , 2022; Li et al , 2022). This is a position that also affects the hotel industry, given that it too must identify strategies and mechanisms that contribute to helping the sector recover activity (Sampaio et al , 2022).…”
