Tournaisian 40Ar/39Ar age for alkaline basalts from the Lublin Basin (SE Poland)

Abstract: The main aim of this study is to pre cisely de ter mine the age of the al ka line bas alts oc cur ring within the low er most part of Carbon if er ous suc ces sion in the north east ern part of the Lublin Ba sin (Parczew IG 7 and Parczew IG 9 bore holes; SE Po land). The new whole-rock 40 Ar/ 39 Ar data con strain the age of vol ca nic ac tiv ity and em place ment of al ka line bas alts to the Late Tournaisian (348.0 ± 0.8 Ma) with pos si ble pro lon ga tion to the Mid dle Visean (338.5 ± 0.7 Ma). How ever, t… Show more

“…The mag matic ac tiv ity was par tic u larly pro nounced in the EEP area in clud ing the Lublin re gion where al ka line bas alts up to 230 m thick de vel oped be tween late Tournaisian and mid-Visean times (Pañczyk and Nawrocki, 2015). Al ka line diabase and syenite in truded near the P³ock re gion, while sev eral al kaline plutons are known from NE Po land, in clud ing the gabbro-syenite Pisz, syenite E³k, and syenite-monzogranite Grajewo in tru sions (Fig.…”

“…A common tectonic characteristic of all these faults is a dextral strike-slip component of their Carboniferous-Permian kinematics. Besides, next to the Kock fault, Upper Tournaisian to Visean alkaline basalts occur (Pańczyk and Nawrocki, 2015), which points to an intraplate magmatism in the EEC/TESZ lithosphere at that time. On the SE side of the TESZ, magmatic rocks were identified at the KFLZ and DFZ and these are dealt with in this paper.…”

“…1), alkaline basalt was found in boreholes. It yielded Late Tournaisian to Visean Ar-Ar extrusion ages between 348 Ma and 338 Ma (Pańczyk and Nawrocki, 2015) and contributed to a bunch of evidence of magmatic activity across the TESZ in Carboniferous/Permian times. In the Lublin region, Lower Palaeozoic platform sediments overlie the 2.0-1.8 Ga crystalline basement of the SW-ward sloping margin of the East European Craton.…”
