Toward a comprehensive dimensional model of sustainable behaviors

Abstract: The goal of this study was to identify the underlying latent dimensions that account for variation in sustainable behaviors (SBs) among American adults. Our strategy was to assess all of the SBs sampled in existing measures, as well as a number of other variables relevant to individual differences in SBs, in a community sample (N = 1234). Variation in SBs could be accounted for by four broad dimensions: (1) goods, (2) food, (3) transportation, and (4) engagement. These dimensions were related to a range of cri… Show more

“…We measured Environmental Motives with items assessing Extrinsic (3 items, ω t = .87 [sample 1]) 1 ; 4 items, .87, .85, Intrinsic (4 items, ω t = .92, .71, .86), and Social (4 items, ω t = .93, .87, .86) motives for sustainable behaviors (Hopwood, Lenhausen, et al, 2022). Items were responded to on a 5‐point Likert response scale.…”

“…Perceptions toward and outlooks on climate change are complex in ways that may affect how personality is associated with proenvironmental attitudes across sectors of the population. For instance, views about climate change, and the degree to which personality traits may be related to those views, may depend in part on how old people are Hopwood et al, 2023). Aging is generally associated with increasing levels of generativity, agency, and mastery (Best & Freund, 2021;Heckhausen, 1997;Hutteman et al, 2014), and this could have the effect of heightening concerns about climate change and proenvironmental attitudes (Bleidorn et al, 2021;Milfont & Sibley, 2011).…”

“…As shown in Table 3, most co-cited reference papers were directly related to environmental sustainability. Other co-cited references are related to theories such as organizational behavior considered in the studies of Gholamrezai et al (2021), Hameed et al (2021), andHopwood et al (2022) or empirical models including fuzzy, structural equations, bounds testing approaches, and linear models that have been applied in many studies to assess environmental sustainability. In particularl, the fuzzy model was considered in the studies of Garg et al (2022), Goyal et al (2021), Guo &Wu (2022), andPerçin (2022).The structural equations were considered in the studies of Sachin & Rajesh (2022) and Sekhar & Raina (2021).The bounds testing approaches were considered in the studies of Udemba (2022) and Danlami et al (2018), and the linear models were applied in the studies of Sameen & Feroze (2021) and Bissinger & Bogner (2018).…”

“…Similarly, people's perspectives on social and environmental sustainability should be assessed. Hopwood et al ( 63 ) examined the connection between individual motivations and sustainability behavior in the travel industry. They discovered a substantial correlation between motivational incentives reflecting personality factors and sustainability behavior.…”
