Toward a heuristic optimum design of rolling schedules for tandem cold rolling mills

Abstract: Scheduling for tandem cold mills refers to the determination of inter-stand gauges, tensions and speeds of a specified product. Optimal schedules should result in maximized throughput and minimized operating cost. This paper presents a genetic algorithm based optimization procedure for the scheduling of tandem cold rolling mills. The optimization procedure initiates searching from a logical staring pointan empirical rolling schedule-and ends with an optimum cost. Cost functions are constructed to heuristically… Show more

“…Although its ubiquitous presence in the rolling literature is still a matter of some more time, however, the general robustness of the genetic algorithms and its several variants, plus the success stories reported in this work and some of its predecessors [1,[15][16][17] provide a strong candidature for this class 11 of algorithms in the context of material deformation area in general, and the rolling processes in particular.…”

“…Table no1 shows the material data for input material and output desired, depend on input and output data a roll pass schedule prepared. The basic procedure for the scheduling of cold rolling mills is usually based on past experience, on trials or on rules of thumb [14] [3]. Table no.2 shows the typical pass schedule.…”

“…1) and it has been object of several works. [2][3][4][5][6] Usually, set-up generation task is performed by a system including powerful hardware and robust software based on a detailed process model. In this paper, two systems, both based on a cost function which evaluates the mill quality and productivity, are proposed.…”
